Three / Tri

The Atrium

Brief Introduction

St Mary’s Church is fronted by a large garden space which is very much in need of redevelopment and landscaping.  At the west and north side of the church is a car park.  There is also a large garden to the south side of the church which, at present, is incorporated into the vicarage garden but which actually belongs to the church.

Proposal

We want to make the best use of the space for the benefit of the wider community, and which will also benefit the other projects being proposed on site. Through this development, we want to

Enhance the physical environment of Butetown, and provide a pleasant transition between the city centre, Butetown and the Bay

Improve the facade and experience of a building of historic and cultural interest

Create a large paved area to enable gathering to strengthen community cohesion, interaction and engagement, sometimes through organised community events (such as food events, markets, celebrations, etc) but also simply providing a clean and safe place in which to gather and sit

Create a ‘green space’ for Butetown and the city centre which will enhance physical and mental health well being, and enrich our connection and responsibility to the natural world

Accommodate an outdoor café space with tables and chairs from a possible Community Café  (see Project Four)

Begin a community garden project with raised beds for growing herbs and vegetable and which will also benefit the cooking project in The Hearth and the Community Café to improve physical and emotional well-being and community cohesion and sustainability.

Create an enclosed, quiet garden to the south of the church, an oasis of calm

Provide a designated area for bicycle stands

Be a place of learning, with outdoor displays (linked with Project Six) with historical information about Butetown and St Mary’s
